Buying Used CNC Routers: How to Choose the Right Seller

Buying a used machine is always a bit worrisome. When the used machine costs thousands of dollars, like a used computer controlled router, a mild sense of worry can be replaced by anxiety. Today, CNC machinery is commonly purchased pre-owned due its high price range. For industrial routers, that range is $20,000 to $1 million—a divide that reflects how the size and production capacity of a CNC defines its price.

When commercial woodworkers need a CNC router, they often search through equipment inventories, looking for a machine that has the ideal pedigree: low use, low price, and a great maintenance record. There exists a better way to find used CNC routers: first, identify the best sellers. In doing so, you narrow your search to routers that have been properly evaluated, serviced, and priced. As you search for sellers, be sure to follow the tips below:

Business History

If a seller is successful, it has no reason to be misleading about a machine’s condition, not honor its customer service agreement, or sell machinery that is overpriced. A good rule of thumb is to choose a seller that has a successful business history of at least two years. You can use an online credit reporting service such as Experian to check a seller’s business history.

BBB Record

A seller’s record at the Better Business Bureau (BBB) can reveal a lot about its customer service. More often than not, sellers who fail to resolve customer complaints have this reported to the BBB. Although all businesses receive some complaints that do not deserve resolution, professional businesses always resolve them. This demonstrates professionalism—a quality that you want in a seller of used CNC routers.

Customer References

When you speak with a seller’s preferred references, you may not hear how most of its customers feel about its services. If a seller offers you three to four references, ask for a total of eight. If the seller refuses to provide the extra references, looking for another seller is the safest move.

Business Focus

If you plan on buying a used CNC machine, you should buy from a seller that specializes in used woodworking machinery, as it requires special evaluation prior to sale. Looking at a seller’s online inventory can usually determine where its focus lies. If you see lots of new machines and few used ones, the focus is probably on the former. RT Machine specializes in selling both new and used machinery.
